While the glass is still far enough apart from the palmrest to avoid small particles causing damage right away, the display can flex a little inward and any little bits of crap in your machine will get literally stabbed into the display panel. So now, not only does the display scratch way more easily and with greater noticeability in my experience, but you had better not take your dainty little display anywhere near dust or particulates. (The glass sheet with the black borders around the screen was a removable part that could be unglued.) They also decided that the gap between the palmrest and the display didn't need to be so big. This time, they decided that the extra panel of glass over the flush-bezel LCD wasn't necessary anymore. When Apple was thinning out the MacBook Pro with Retina display, they cut corners (as they always seem to do). My most recent two, an Early- and then Late-2013 15" DG MacBook Pro, both have shared a rather obnoxious and plain ridiculous durability problem. I have had many older MacBook/MacBook Pros over the last few years as I have been working through the used market.
